Question:
I work in a hospital where they offer to be part of the union, i heard some brothers saying that their is ikatalaf on this issue of being part of the union.
Answer:
Unions have a certain function which requires a lot of reading to understand. The union decides that they want an increase in the wages for example, and bring their demand to the employer. The employer refuses, so they threaten to go on strike on a certain day if their demands are not met. If they don't, they stop working and go on strike, putting pressure on the employer by causing his business to stop while they negoiate. This has a problem Islamically which is that you as a worker you work for someone under a contract. The contract is when the both parties agree that the worker will perform certain functions for a certain return. As long as the contract is valid, neither party may violate it in any way. For example, the employer may not decide to stop paying the employee or to reduce the payment or change its method, etc. Similarly, the worker may not decide to change the job description or cut his work hours by 2 hours, etc.
So, the union by definition is created with a mandate to violate the contract of individual employees. Such action is not allowed. Joining a group with such function is not allowed either.
