Adhaalath Party Playing with Semantics

When the neo-colonialists thinkers examine the political landscape of Maldives they are sure to be pleased with what they have been able to achieve.Although the frequency in which some Islamic slogans have become audible in political discourses might be of a little worry to them, the fact that people who use these slogans are 'modernistic' in their thinking and outlook is what comforts the Western policy makers.A case in point is the manner in which some sloganeers try to counter the myth of 'gender equality'.A recent article appearing in Adhaalath party's website attacking the idea of 'gender equality' demonstrates this fact. The contents of the article might suggest that the author and the femminists were worlds apart in their thinking. Not quite so.In stark reality both sides were heavily influenced by western way of thinking and disourses such as these contributes to the stranglehold of the western values.

Back to the article in question. The author of the article poses a question to the femminists by asking 'And what would our feminists say about that primordial primeval occurrence that created the first two human beings: a male and a female. Why didn’t Hawwa (Eve) overtake Adam (May the peace of Allah be upon them both) in the first instance and secure the power position and become the leader of humankind as would be so desired by today’s feminists?

This kind of superficial approach to the subject matter is extremely problematic. It should be known that the femminists(most of them) do not believe in the Quran to start with or they dont have a clue of its authenticity. So how could the question of 'Why didn’t Hawwa (Eve) overtake Adam ' be of any relevance to the femminists? If someone does not believe in the authenticity of a source, then by default the contents of that source becomes irrevelent to him.Thats what we all do.If we receive an email from an obscure source we just send it to trash although the contents of the email contain possibilities of becoming a millionaire overnight. So where is the 'common grounds' between the author and the woman rights activists for discussing ideas about creation of Adam and Eve.Perhaps some in the femminist camp(those who have already converted to Christianity due to sarcastic manner in which Islam have been presented to them) may believe in the 'Adam and Eve' story mentioned in the Bible. But Bible and Quran do not share commonality. Therefore,on reading the article it was not clear whether the author was referring to the Quran or some other scripture.Refusal to build arguments on the foundations of Islam is an indicative of the low priority attached to actual foundation of Islam. On the political level,Adhaalath party seem to have found 'common grounds' with all the political parties, even with the one which is deemed 'secuar'.Interesting

Another disturbing trend with these people is the use of 'Adam and Eve story' in any discussion related to women in Islam. For example, they would say that the reason why a woman cannot judge is because 'God created Adam first and ordered Eve to obey Adam'.This is nothing but utter rubbish. We cannot delve into the Ghaib(unseen) and pass such stupid judgements. Why Allah created Adam first or why He(swt) created Jinn from fire are not issues which we can discuss further simply because He(swt) did not convey such 'reasons' to us.We merely believe them as facts. No additional thoughts can be built on them.

Lot of people wonder 'Why do these Sheikhs always talk about dress code of women'.This is again due to their facinations with 'Adam and Eve' story.I happen to be in a mosque where one of Adhaalath's leading speaker was attempting to answer the same question. He likened the rules of dress code as the foundation of Islam and explained with the following pattern of thoughts:

Allah(swt) created the first human Adam(alaihi salam) and Hawwa(alaihi sallam).Allah(swt) ordered both of them to refrain from eating a fruit of a certain tree. But Hawwa tempted Adam and both sinned. As a punishment,Allah(swt) uncovered their nakedness..

So the logical deduction is that, since 'covering nakedness' is related to first two human beings Adam and Hawwa, the rule of 'covering awrah' becomes the foundation(using the word 'first') of Islam .This is again utter stupidity and shows the fallacy of logical thinking which involves playing with semantics.

The rules of Islam which include rules such as rules of praying, hajj, salat, fast and dress codes are built on the foundation of Islam.Performing any of these actions means abiding by a text contained in the sources of the deen namely Quran and Sunnah.Thefore, the foundation of deen is the belief in the existence of Allah, the miracle of Quran,Prophethood of Muhammad(sallalahu alaihi wassallam),belief in angels, previous prophets and scriptures and belief in Divine Decree. The affirmation in these elements is what differentiates a Muslim from a kaafir and this is the foundation of Islam.A mere rule of Islam cannot rise to the level of its foundation.Rules of awrah are just like any other rule of Islam.Islam does not offer any reason to get obsessed with just one rule(awrah of woman) as exhibited by our scholars.People not believing or not comprehending the foundation of Islam with absolute conviction should be seen as the most serious problem. Before one says 'you should do this or that because Quran says so',it is imperative to prove that Quran is the miracle of Allah.Rules are rules and they cannot be elevated to the level of foundation

Another key issue is that rules of Islam are not extracted from stories of previous prophets. In other words we dont follow the shariah of previous prophets(nabi). However we should affirm our belief in previous scriptures and messengers simply because they are mentioned in the Quran. But we follow the Shariah of Muhammad(sallahu alaihi wassallam). So,where is the link between 'rules of awrah' and story of Adam(alaihi wassallam)?

In conclusion,as long as the foundations of the deen is not given the top priority and the wrangling over 'dos and donts' continue to dominate the political discussions, western thoughts will seep into the mentality of the people.
