The 2008 presidential election will be the culmination(or perhaps the begining) of a chaotic political path which came into being due to the global politial landscape that existed at the time of Sept 20th incident at Maafushi(Ivan Naseem's case). The incident at Maafushi itself was not the cause of the democracy mongering which the country is currently experiencing. But this incident happened at a time when someone in Washington had announced that 'You are with us or with the bad guys'.This statement is not a simple personal statment aimed at a person hiding in a cave in Central Asia who is known for releasing home videos. But whats encapsulated in these words contain fiery instructions to Muslims including those who are in ruling positions about the governing model they should be marketing to their own citizens. Therefore, when Maafushi incident occurred and its link to the processes of governance were questioned, those in the government structure immediately realised they were faced with two challenges of which the first was to soothe internal agitations following September 20th incident in Maafushi(they did calm the situation for few months until BBC wanted to teach Maldivians a thing or two about democracy) and secondly ensuring their survivability at the global political level by complying with the message of the Texas cowboy which resulted in the reform package of June 9th which was replete with terms which Washington and London had specifically packaged for the 'Middle East' market. Ofcourse this fact cannot be appreciated by people who instantly became politicians after the said incident at Maafushi on Sept20th 2003. Therefore,it could be said the current political path is a not a path which Maldivians paved for themselves, but a path that was designated for them to become politically active within the narrow parameters of the colonial structures.
As for the Islamists, although they are not participating in the elections directly, they are also drowned in this political path because their fatwas and religions sermons were given with the sole intention of effecting the outcome of the this election in someway or another.
