If the Maldivian public are to make sense of what their politicians(Islamists included) are saying, the public should be either suffering from an extreme case of short memory or they are as fickle-minded as the drug addicts.Interestingly, the drug addicts and these politicians have a lot in common. While the drug addicts cannot stand sraight due to physical weakness, the statements of politicians are so riddled with contradictions that they fall apart like a pack of cards.Such was the case when a prominent politician last week pronounced that he would not support any candidate(for the presidential race) who has served the government. And yet his preferred candidate turned out to be someone who served the government along with him. So,how to get around this contradiction ?
No wonder why the drugs epidemic is such a big issue plaguing the country and the politicians are the real beneficiaries of the epidemic as they can utter whatever they like and escape scrutiny. This type of erratic pattern of thinking can have a profound impact on the Islamic method of thinking because Islam requires 'decisive belief' in aqeedah matters while the political climate breeds irrational thinking. And the dos and donts of Islam cannot have a real impact if the aqeedah is shaky and built upon shallow thought.
